How to contribute
Join the Wharekaka Auxiliary
The Wharekaka Auxiliary was established over 40 years ago by a civic-minded group of local women who saw the opportunity to turn the former MARTINBOROUGH maternity home into a day-care facility for the area’s older residents.
Decorating, cooking, cleaning, and entertaining, they did it all. As the facility transitioned into a residential home, the day-to-day running was taken over by management and a clinical team overseen by a board of trustees. This is how it continues today with both having extremely competent members.
The Auxiliary however continued and still does, to play a very important role in the life of Wharekaka and the well-being of the residents.
We liaise with our wonderful activities officer to provide additional entertainments and outings and we fundraise for extras for the comfort and enjoyment of residents.
All of this is done with a sense of fun and camaraderie between ourselves as a group and our friends in the home.
Being on the Auxiliary is not an onerous task, we do not ask for long-term commitment or involvement, we understand people have busy lives and sometimes that gets in the way of volunteering. As and when you can is great. We get as much fun and enjoyment from meeting the residents as we know they get from our visits.
If you’d like to know more, come along to our friendly monthly meetings.
